On the longitudinal vibrations of a bar with viscous boundaries: Super-stability, super-instability, and loss of damping
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents the investigation of the longitudinal motions of a bar subjected to viscous boundary conditions at each end. These viscous boundary conditions can also be thought of in terms of boundary feedback control. The system is not self-adjoint and for certain parameter regimes exhibits super-stable, super-unstable, and undamped behavior. Closed form solutions to the response of the system subjected to initial conditions and external excitation are obtained. The physical origins of the super-stable and super-unstable behavior are investigated and their intricate connectedness with the continuum model used to understand the dynamics is explained. The issue of discretization of the continuous system is discussed and it is shown that the continuum assumption bestows certain features to the response of the system that no finite dimensional approximation can qualitatively capture. Computational results corroborating the theoretical analysis are presented. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper deals with the boundary feedback control of a bar undergoing axial vibrations. The feedback force is applied to one end of the bar and it is proportional to its velocity. The problem is of fundamental interest in control theory, structural dynamics, and the development of quiet boundaries in fields like earthquake engineering and computational mechanics. The system is not self-adjoin...
متن کاملInvestigation of Thermoelastic Damping in the Longitudinal Vibration of a Micro Beam
In the design of high Quality factor (Q) micro or nano beam resonators, different dissipation mechanisms may have damaging effects on the quality factor. One of the major dissipation mechanisms is the thermoelastic damping (TED) that needs an accurate consideration for prediction. In this paper, thermoelastic damping of the longitudinal vibration of a homogeneous micro beam with both ends clamp...

The influence of physical damping on the numerical stability of time integration analysis is an open question since decades ago. In this paper, it is shown that, under specific very general conditions, physical damping can be disregarded when studying the numerical stability. It is also shown that, provided the specific conditions are met, analysis of structural systems involved in extremely hi...

In the present study, nonlinear vibration of coupled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in presence of surface effect is investigated based on nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beam (EBB) theory. CNTs are embedded in a visco-elastic medium and placed in the uniform longitudinal magnetic field. Using von Kármán geometric nonlinearity and Hamilton’s principle, the nonlinear higher order governing equations are deriv...
